Ditch the expensive pram and spend your money on a private midwife like Jo, says Louise – who had Jo by her side through both pregnancies and both home births.

I first met Jo at a particularly low point in my first pregnancy, I was struggling as I desperately wanted a home birth and came up against a few obstacles with the NHS. I must point out I am a big fan of the NHS, but sadly on this particular occasion, due to constraints on midwives, I wasn’t given the care and attention I should have been given.

At around 32 weeks I was fortunate enough to have an antenatal appointment with Jo, I walked in utterly deflated and she instantly sensed my frustration and just “got” how and why I wanted to birth my baby as I did. I can’t explain how amazing I felt that day, I’d finally met someone who wasn’t questioning my motives or suggesting I was putting my baby at risk by having a home birth, she knew and understood hypnobirthing, most things I didn’t even have to explain to her, she just knew.

My labour started at 42+2 and it was a struggle to get to that point without any intervention from the NHS as they were desperate to induce me and get me in hospital, Jo was amazing at communicating and placating the doctors and getting me to this point at home and calmly.

I gave birth to my boy at home in a pool in my living room with Jo there helping me along every step, talking when I wanted to talk, silent when I was in my “zone”, monitoring me and my baby only when necessary and I felt safe and confident with her there, which to me was invaluable.

After just 11 months I found out I was pregnant again, my husband and I agreed there was no way we were giving birth again without Jo there. As we were still in contact I called her straight away and found out she was now working privately, I booked her there and then and again felt instant relief that she was going to help me through this journey for the 2nd time.

I cannot put into words how much Jo has helped and guided me through both my pregnancies, she’s not only a brilliant midwife and someone I feel totally safe with, but has become a dear friend. There isn’t anything I wouldn’t do to have Jo at the birth of all my babies.

My advice to anyone who is struggling to justify paying for Jo as a midwife when you can go down the NHS route is: it’s all about quality…

Ditch the brand-new pram and buy a ‘pre-loved’ one, spend the money on your birth and I promise it’ll be the best thing you’ve ever done.

Jo made such a huge difference to the way we approached the birth of our first child.

Before my wife Lou was lucky enough to meet Jo at an antenatal check, we really didn’t think that we were going to find a midwife that was on our wavelength. We were sure we wanted a home birth, had done our research and knew it really was the best way forward for Mum and baby. However, every time we met a member of the team, we were confronted with doubting questions, head-shaking and obstacles. It was clear they didn’t think it was a good idea and therefore weren’t being very supportive.

That all changed when Jo came on board. She completely understood what we wanted and gave us the confidence to move forward.

At the birth, she just knew exactly what to do and say and when to do and say it, so important in a Hypnobirthing environment. I never thought labour and birth could be such a positive experience and Jo was a big part of making that happen.

When we fell pregnant with baby number two it was a no brainier to find the money to employ Jo privately. She again was the perfect support, and the birth was even better, things were so relaxed. I even made bacon sandwiches for everyone just half hour after our baby Ada was born. We don’t plan to have a third child, but I have no doubt who we would be calling first if we change our minds.

I never thought labour and birth could be such a positive experience and Jo was a big part of making that happen.
